Urban Biodiversity Iceland
Inspiring curiosity and action about urban biodiversity
Why is urban biodiversity important?
Urban green spaces are a great way to experience nature close to home and are important for protecting biodiversity and other ecosystem services within cities. Green spaces are any urban place people encounter nature like public parks, playgrounds, private gardens, or even cemeteries. They can also help us connect with conservation issues in other places around the world. What plant and animal species can you find in your local green space?
Alien invasion?
Some alien plant species can be a real problem in urban areas where disturbance is already the norm. Invasive plants are alien plants that cause negative impacts on the environment, health, and/or economy. The good news is, some of these plants are edible! Learn how to harvest local and problematic plants to make some new favorite dishes.
WingFluencer
Flóki the Raven has a lot to say about biodiversity in Reykjavík. He lives in downtown Reykjavik, loves collecting hats and shiny things, and is passionate about biodiversity. Flóki is a bit of a loudmouth but has very important things to say. WingFluencer is a travel website for birds to review green spaces in Iceland. This website isn’t for humans, but Flóki has shared some screenshots that might be useful for humans too.
