Urban Biodiversity in Iceland
Who We Are.
We are a collective of international ecologists living in Iceland who are passionate about urban biodiversity and connecting people with nature.
Our Motive.
As densification is used as a climate change strategy, it is essential to also highlight the importance of green spaces in tackling climate change by fostering urban biodiversity to meet the goals of Reykjavík's Green Deal, UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Global Biodiversity Framework.
Our Vision.
Through interactive lecture series and guided plant harvesting and birdwatching walks, we aim to bring awareness to local environmental issues while inspiring curiosity and action. We invite people of all ages and backgrounds to journey through local green areas, fostering neighborhood awareness and offering residents a chance to connect with their local nature. We highlight edible alien and invasive plants, problematic alien species, local birds, and native flora and fauna. We point out the importance of having a network of large and small green spaces throughout the city for biodiversity.
